| Kolkata is the Capital of West Bengal. Kolkata served as the capital of India during the British rule until 1912. Once the centre of modern education, industry, science, culture and politics in India. Kolkata houses nine universities and numerous colleges affiliated to them or to other universities located outside. The University of Calcutta (founded in 1857) has more than 200 affiliated colleges. Bengal Engineering & Science University and Jadavpur University are notable engineering universities. Calcutta Medical College is the first institution teaching modern medicine in Asia. Kolkata also has institutes like IIM which is the leader in Management education in India. Looking at all this there was hardly any scope for education Media and Communication. EMDI Institute of Media and Communication took the initiative to fill this gap and launched EMDI in Kolkata in the year 2009.
