The Creative & Media Industry Landscape
The creative industry is one of the most dynamic and fastest growing sectors in the regional economy. Considered as a field driven with passion - highly skilled people are the crux of the creative and media industry and for the ambitious there is no dearth of opportunities to prove their worth. The industry has becoming increasingly global and is undergoing huge changes driven by new technologies. Creative events, eye catching advertisements, thought provoking articles, social & new media opportunities all form the nucleus of this sector.

Sector wise the Event Management & Tourism Industry in the Middle East is back on a robust growth curve. The launch of iconic projects such as the BurjKhalifa, The Metro&Meydan, the impact of exhibitions such as Citysacpe, GITEX, The Air show, and the huge investment in sporting events such as the Rugby7’s, Tennis Championship and FIFA Club World Cup- demonstrates that  the UAE is an event managers paradise. With the rise of Abu Dhabi on the Events and Culture platform with events such as the Formula 1 Race, WOMAD, Beats on the Beach, etc the UAE is back on the global spotlight.  Qanal Al Qasba in Sharjah is widely regarded as the Cultural Hub of the UAE, and all the emirates are realising the power of events and tourism, with a plethora of shows, concerts, festivals and carnivals aimed at attracting tourists and locals alike. The booming Wedding Industry and demand for perfection, ensures that wedding management and planning is here to stay.

The advertising & design landscape is equally attractive and is probably one of the most sought after career options for prospective students. Global advertising expenditure  is estimated at US$ 500 billion. The UAE today is host to a thriving media community from Dubai Media City, Abu Dhabi’s TwoFour54 and other free - zones encompassing over 1,200 regional and international media companies and freelancers. Corporates include CNN, Reuters, Dow Jones, CNBC as well as regional media powerhouses such as Showtime Arabia, MBC and Dubai TV. Some of the world’s largest advertising firms such as JWT, Ogilvy, Lowe, Team Y & R, Dentsu, Bates, Saatchi and Saatchi, Leo Burnett, BBDO and Choueiri Group have offices based in the UAE. Graphic designers and visual communicators are sought after to work in all industries, there is never a dearth of requirement for talented individuals with unique insights

The Communication & Journalism industryhas seen a revolution, especially during the recession, as companies used more of PR strategies to spread awareness of their brand. The PR Industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world - evidenced by the fact that the PR Industry in the Middle East has grown from zero in the early 80’s to an estimated $100 million today, and globally estimated to be US$ 8 billion. The Journalism & Mediaside of the business has also seen an expansion – the UAE has grown from having just a few daily newspapers and magazines to having more than a dozen dailies andhundreds of magazines and periodicals over the last 5 years.Digital technology is transforming passive consumers intoactive creators of media content, witnessed by the growth of social networksand User Generated Content (UGC).

The Music Scene is no less. Radio Stations, DJ’s and Music artists have ensured that the UAE (especially Dubai) is renowned for its world-beating entertainment. The UAE leads with 19 radio stations operating under five networks. The number of FM radio stations in the 18 Arab countries increased to 316 from 211 in February last year, a 49.76 percent rise. According to Warner Brothers Publications, the disc jockey industry generates as much as $10 billion per year. This has resulted in a huge requirement of DJ’s, Music producers and Club Managers for the ever booming audio industry

Initiatives to establish zones and clusters such as Dubai Festival City, Culture Village,Dubai Sports City, ADNEC, Twofour54 and the US$ 75 billion Dubai Land Project amongst a host of other projects reinforce the beliefthat this sector will be the driver for the next decade. The UAE has developed an effective media hub which provides regional headquarters for a number of international media companies as well asnational media.
